The Iranian government has reportedly recruited intelligence officers to track down illegal cryptocurrency miners in the country.
The Iranian Students’ News Agency reported the testimony of a distribution coordinator at a state-run grid operator, who said the Ministry of Intelligence had begun setting up committees across the country to find and seize crypto mining farms.
Earlier this week, an Iranian Energy Ministry spokesman declared that unauthorized cryptocurrency miners would have to pay a hefty fine if discovered. In addition to the fees, miners will also have to compensate for the damages they cause to the electricity network. According to the spokesman, unauthorized mining of cryptocurrencies creates problems in the electricity supply due to the damage it causes to the local power grid and transformers.
The government has promised local whistleblowers cash incentives if they notify the authorities of illegal activities.
